The Shi'a school of thought

A Muslim school of thought asserting the legitimate authority of 'Ali and his literal descendents.

Shi'a began as a political faction supporting 'Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad and 4th caliph of the Muslim Community. In 661 c.e. 'Ali died in a violent attack. 

Shi'a is a minority in the global Muslim community with strong presence in Iran and Iraq. There are adherents as well in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, East Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
